Hello, and welcome to "The Resilient Leader." Coach Charlotte Edwards here. This week's topic, "The Hidden Cost of Playing It Safe."
Last week, we talked about failure. Have you ever noticed how one failure can quietly change the way we lead, the way we operate? Maybe you tried something that didn't work, had a difficult conversation that went poorly, or made a decision you wish you could take back. Without even realizing it, you begin playing it safe. You place yourself on the bench instead of getting back on the field to play the game.
It's an easy cycle to fall into. We begin to avoid difficult conversations, we delay making decisions, we stay inside of our comfort zone. We stop stretching. Maybe because you don't want to experience that feeling of failure again.
Leadership isn't about avoiding mistakes. It's about becoming someone who knows how to recover well.
Recover your perspective. Don't let one mistake become bigger than it is. Ask yourself, "Will this matter a year from now? What would I tell anyone else in this situation?" Separate facts from feelings. Our emotions are real, but they don't always tell the whole story. "What do I know to be true? What assumptions am I making?" are great questions to ask ourselves.
Also, talk to yourself like a coach. Your inner dialogue matters. Instead of, "I'm terrible at this," try, "I'm learning. I haven't mastered this yet." And finally, get feedback. Don't recover in isolation. Seek input from someone you can trust. Often, they can see strengths and solutions you couldn't see in the moment.
Every successful leader has a collection of things that didn't work. Growth always requires the willingness to look imperfect for a season.
So my closing challenge to you today is ask yourself, "Where am I playing it safe because of failure from the past?" Don't allow yesterday's mistake to become tomorrow's limitation. Your next breakthrough may be waiting just outside the comfort zone. It may simply require the courage to try again. Have an amazing week, my friends.
